AUF wishes to thank all who have made donations to the Utoya Fund.
We wish to stress that no donations will be used for party political purposes. Donations will be spent exclusively to realize the project, “New Utoya”, as described on this webpage. The project includes erecting new buildings, amending the terrain for a new beach, as well as creating a memorial to honor the victims of 22 July 2011.
The 22 July Fund is independent, handles its own finances, and has its own auditor. The managing group is responsible for the making of plans and the progress of the project, as well as ensuring that the all funds and resources are used accordingly.

AUF has decided to restore Utoya. After a lengthy and thorough process, we have concluded that restoration of Utoya is the optimum way to respond to the terrorist attacks 22 July 2011.
In collaboration with Fantastic Norway and PEAB, we have prepared a plan describing different scenarios on what “New Utoya” may be like. The project focuses on safety, society, and community.
We wish to invite new generations to a better and safer Utoya, maintaining its atmosphere and traditions in a new ambient. We want to focus on all measures that may contribute to making a stay at Utoya a positive experience.
It is important to AUF that the project remains environment friendly, allows for handicap accessibility, and that maintenance costs are kept at a minimum. External consultant reports have been gathered in order to ensure an appropriate dimensioning of the new buildings. In so doing, we aim at ensuring a sustainable economic subsistence of “New Utoya” in many years to come.
Deciding on the location of new buildings, due consideration will be given to future needs as well as the sentiments surrounding the tragic events of 22 July 2011.
22 July 2011, Norway was struck by a brutal terrorist attack. 77 people were killed in and around the Government Quarter and Utoya. Many were severely injured.
Since the 1950´s, Utoya has been among the most important youth campsites in Norway. It has housed thousands of youth who have spent their summer break coming together to promote freedom, democracy, equality, and solidarity. Numerous political reforms in Norway have originated around the campfire at Utoya.
The days subsequent to the attack, the ones affected experienced a massive support from the entire Norwegian public. Sympathy, community, love, and mutual respect represented the response of an entire nation. Many wished to contribute economically in order to restore the island. Thus the 22 July Fund was established to handle the incoming funds.
It was not a given that AUF would return to Utoya. A difficult balance had to be struck; taking into consideration several factors, different wishes and needs. In so doing, the deference to survivors, next of kin, and bereaved has been of crucial importance, while at the same time regarding present and future generations who were not directly involved in the attacks.
Following a general review and thorough discussions within AUF, the organization has decided to proceed with the restoration of the island. We consider this the optimum way to honor the victims of the attacks. By restoring Utoya, we are sending a message that the perpetrator failed at his quest to wreak havoc on the Norwegian society, the creation of which we have all taken part in.
The restoration calls for a balance between building something new while at the same time commemorating and remembering the tragic events of 22 July 2011. For that reason, a memorial will be prepared. The planning of this will be conducted in cooperation with the next of kin and bereaved families.
Utoya shall once again become a beacon of democracy, tolerance, and equality in opportunity.

The Fund has received approximately 40 million Norwegian Kroner (NOK) to restore Utoya. The “New Utoya” project maintains an expense limit of 60 million NOK.
We are very grateful for all donations enabling the restoration of Utoya.
Both minor and more sizeable donations have been made. Individuals, including teens who wish to show support, count for an overwhelming part of the donations made. We have so far received more than 1400 donations of 1000 NOK or less.
Furthermore, a surplus has been drawn from several book projects and musical projects, among others “Mitt Lille Land” (Gyldendal og Aschehoug).
Other, more sizeable donations have been made by LO, Petter Stordalen, Sparebank 1, Fellesforbundet and Fagforbundet. SSU, the Swedish sister organization of AUF, has organized their own collection for the purpose of restoring Utoya.
No donations will be used for party political purposes. Donations will be spent exclusively to realize the project, “New Utoya”, as described on this webpage.
